Merry Christmas, New Developments, and Upcoming Articles

First of all, Merry Christmas! πŸ™‚

Really busy these days with moving to Japan and other stuff, so I thought I’d just post an update on what’s happening and what’s coming up.

Picked up my Alien Registration card in Japan today, it was absolutely painless and really easy. This might have had to do with the fact that it was Christmas eve and the office was pretty much empty. I was able to sign up for National Health Insurance at the same time, they gave me the health insurance within 10 minutes. Think on that. And the Japanese Health care system is really, really good.Β  I’ll post pics of stuff when I have the chance.

I’ve just made contact with a few old developers I used to work with and some new artists, so lots of exciting new games to be worked on may happen…

..and I’m working on plans for Episode II of Arvale: Treasure of Memories already.

I also plan on offering contract music composing services again, once I get the time to set it up.

In addition, I’m working on a bunch of Royalty Free Music packs of with different styles and themes.

I’ll also do a Broken Blueprint play-through video when I get the chance.

There are also a ton of Articles I have written but just haven’t posted up yet, such as:

Update the Incredible Shrinking Studio Article with the Akai LPK 25 and the my portable chair (yes, a portable chair, you’ll see).

Music writing tips on composing and the perception of music styles via instrumentation; with examples on how to write in middle eastern, flamenco, and jazz.

What do to when you feel like a miserable failure.

Listening to traffic reports while driving and having an epiphany about the core issues with your life.

Using the Founding Fathers argument to ruin a good debate.

The hypocrisy of thinking everyone should have the right to believe whatever they want, as long as they want to believe what you do.

How long it really takes to write and record an album.

A post on how to get started using an SRS (spaced repetition System).

Every excuse you give to not travel abroad is nonsense. ‘I have to pay for a $50 for a Passport (which lasts 10 years), I can’t afford that!’ and other stupid excuses.

The state of Arizona has tons of culture, you just don’t know what culture actually means.

A review of the Monkey Island Special Edition.

More funny search terms.

Game design is not difficult, if anything, it’s confusing.

Doing really annoying things that only have to be done once, do them well.

If I ever have offspring…

Doctors are people too, really smart ones at that, so shut up.

The economy is fine according the to JEDI.

A review of Tomodachi 友達 Collection for DS (because it’s an amazingly awesome game).

In any case, I would like to thank everyone for coming and reading my blog, playing my free games, buying my games, listening to my music, using my Royalty Free music, and I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season!

PDAmill’s Xmas Present: Anthelion 1 and Arvale II for FREE

pdamilllholiday

It looks like the fine folks at PDAmill Game Studios are turning this into a yearly event. πŸ™‚

You can now go pick up Anthelion: The Galactic Alliance and Arvale II: Ocean of Time for FREE. I’m totally biased (because I wrote the story and music for both games), but they are fantastic games, so you should really go pick them up.

More info on the PDAmill Game Studios site: here.

They also have free PC versions of Arvale 1, Anthelion II, Flux Challenge, GameBox Asia and GameBox Solitaire there too, so be sure and check them out.

I’ll get them added to my Free Games page as soon as I can with some more info on each game. What I’ve noticed so far:

Arvale II’s GUI and gfx are from the iPhone version, which looks pretty slick, but it’sΒ  still using the Windows Mobile music and SFX (so the download is really small).

Anthelion is in widescreen so it’s gfx are pretty nice, even better than the Windows Mobile version, but it still has the default controls (which are dumb). When you pick it up and start playing, be sure and go to the settings screen first and turn off Roll and turn off inverse controls, you’ll be happy you did πŸ˜‰

In both games it seems arrow keys work fine and numbers 1,2,3,4 on the keyboard work as the action buttons. Enter key seems to work great in Arvale II as the Use key as well.

Enjoy!

Music Archive Now Available

music-notes1

Over the years I’ve been asked many times to make my game music available for download. Rejoice! Because now it’s all available!

You want the Lumberjack song from Catchy Cadence (the one where I sing like a Drunk Disney Character)? You Bet. Looking for the Arvale Title Piano Music? Have that too. What about the catchy theme from Bowling for Burgers? Yup. All freely available in the highest quality formats I could get my hands on. Go check out the Music Archive.

Please note that these are only available for personal listening use and enjoyment. These are still in use by their respective owners and cannot be used in any other projects. If you are looking for Free Royalty Free Music, please visit the Free Music page.

There are still a few tunes missing from some games I couldn’t find which I will add later, but I definitely have all the major bases covered. I also plan on sprucing up the page with comments on the songs, how they were written, when they were written, how they fit into the game, and so on.

I also might change the order of the songs later on, but for now, Alphabetical by Game Title it shall be πŸ™‚

Enjoy!

Treasure of Memories Video

Since I released Arvale: Treasure of Memories last week, many people have been curious to see a video showing what the game looks like.

This video shows off many of the dialogues, cutscenes, and battles which Treasure of Memories is chock-full of and should give a pretty good idea of what to expect. The background track is also one of the main pieces or music in the game (written by, you know, that composer who does that music for Jaybot7 ;)).

Hope you enjoy it πŸ™‚

Arvale: Treasure of Memories Trial Version Now Available

As the title says, a Trial Version of Arvale: Treasure of Memories, Ep. 1 is now available. So now everyone can give the game a spin before spending their hard-earned cash on it πŸ™‚

Arvale: Treasure of Memories Release Date Announcement

calendar

It will be December 4th.

There, I said it. Now it’s official. So now I gotta stick to it.

  • Arvale: Treasure of Memories will make a great Christmas present for all your gaming loved ones!
  • It’s so green, you won’t even need a stocking to stuff it in. It’ll be downloadable!
  • It will be so fun to play, you’ll want to buy it for all your friends!
  • It will be so affordable, you’ll even be able to do that!

Alright, enough marketing talk. As I sit in the airport on my way to Las Vegas (for business, really!) I’m 100% certain the game will be released by December 4th.

In fact, I’m meeting up with the worlds best game-tester/usability/programmer/awesomist I have ever known (Peter Balogh) while I am there (and I’ve just begun play-testing the game), so it seems like perfect timing, don’t you think?

Coincidence?! You be the judge!

You excited? I sure am.

Escape from Hellenvyrde Gameplay Video

Here’s entertainment for your Sunday Afternoon πŸ™‚

For those of you who want to see Escape from Hellenvyrde, but don’t want to actually get Neverwinter Nights just to play it (read: everyone)– I’ve recorded this 20 minute video for you. It plays through the entire demo so you can see the gameplay and conversations. Vimeo is fantastic quality too. Be sure to watch it in full screen so you can read the texts more clearly.

I think I played through it slowly enough for anyone to be able to read, but if anything goes to fast… sorry πŸ™‚ Be sure and read all the responses to the NPC characters. I forgot I wrote some of them and many of them made me laugh out loud quite a bit. What do you think of it?

I just had to make a video of it. I was too proud of the little demo. It holds a special place in my heart, so to speak. AndΒ  I know that most people don’t actually have Neverwinter Nights, I highly doubt anyone will go out and buy it just to play my little demo, and it’s getting ridiculously hard to run older games on Vista.

In fact, when I decided to record this video, I couldn’t even get Neverwinter Nights to run on Vista anymore. I have no idea what happened to Vista. It just continually blows more the longer I use it. I cringe every time I have to boot into Vista.

I finally got Neverwinter Nights to work by using Crossover on my Mac. Think about that.

For those interested, I recorded the movie with Camtasia for Mac. I love Camtasia Studio and used it extensively when recording gameplay videos for PDAmill Game Studios on the PC. I was super happy to see they have a Mac version. It’s simple to use, has plenty of editing and transition stuff, and captures video and audio rather seamlessly. (For system audio, you may have to download/update a free app called Soundflower, which allows you to re-route your system audio to an input). However…

Camtasia for Mac is nowhere near as awesome as it is on the PC. The export options are nowhere near as advanced or customizable. And the export function is slow and completely ridiculous. No matter what format you try to export to, it will first export it to a Quicktime movie (which takes forever, it’s really, really, really slow). And then it will transcode into whatever format you wanted all over again (even if you wanted to export to a quicktime movie, it will encode it twice!). Ridiculous. My Mac Book ain’t slow either, 2.4 GHz Core Duo with 4GB Ram should be more than enough.

And it doesn’t save a cache of the first rendering in case you want to take the same movie and simply output to a different format. Not only that, it continually fills my hard disk with temp files (that are completely hidden) which will only clear up after rebooting the OS. Someday, it may be as good as Camtasia Studio for PC, but that day is not today.

I don’t do screen captures often enough these days to do a full comparison, but I know there must be better screen movie capture utilities for Mac out there already.

I recorded it at the highest resolution and quality I could, I have no idea how Youtube will compress the hell out of it. Come to think of it, I don’t think Youtube even allows 20 minute videos. Damn, I gotta host it somewhere…

Vimeo it shall be!
