What kind of games do you want?

by Jason Surguine on June 20, 2009

Since I finally have some freedom, and I’m full of determination (and caffeine), I’ve got lots of ideas floating around in my head on some new games to develop. And I wish any readers out there who dig the Arvale games, Broken Blueprint, etc; or simply dig my music or my style in general to drop your ideas and what type of game you want wish to see from me. Just leave a comment in the comments section.

Wait! Hold on a sec… Before you run to the comments and say ‘Huge MMORPG Arvale VI: Wheelbarrow edition!!’ Try to think of smaller scale ideas for now. ;)

While a new Arvale is definitely in the idea shed, and it is possible (and partially developed in several engines), a full length RPG such as Arvale 1,2 or ST takes tons of content and close to a year to finish. On the other hand, an episodic RPG series (several 4-5 hour RPGs released a few months apart with an overarching story), is an idea I’ve been kicking around for a few years but I don’t know if it is possible… let me know your ideas on that if it is something you would like to see.

Other possibilities include:

A fun platform jumping game (Mario, Sonic, etc),
Wacky casual game (sushi-making, house cleaning, robot repair, etc),
Parlor shooting (Duck Hunt, Operation Wolf, Time Crisis, etc),
Episodic Adventure games (like Broken Blueprint, Sam & Max, Monkey Island) is also possible.

Basically, your imagination is the limit here, nothing is too weird or off-the-wall, I’m just fishing for what you really want to play.

This is your chance to get a game created that you’ve always wanted… or perhaps were always curious how it would turn out ;)

I’m looking forward to your ideas.

Arvale: The Space Bard

A space faring Duncan in a “Space Trader” type game. Along with exploring and trading you could have mini-games based on the attractions that Duncan has in his traveling show.

Example: While Duncan was on Osgard IV looking for items to peddle to other worlds he came across a merchant selling an ancient Tri-Horn.

Duncan buys the expensive and rare ancient Tri-Horn and adds it to his attractions. Whenever Duncan arrives at a new port the player could play a mini-game based on the Tri-Horn (matching patterns or something Guitar Heroesque) to earn cash to buy items for resale ect… More attractions means more mini-games to earn cash.

You start with one attraction to generate income, plus what ever you can buy and sell while exploring. It would not have to be restricted to musical instruments and such.

Duncan could find things like ‘Magical Neon Signs’ that would attract more patrons but they are so expensive he has to make many trade runs to buy it, or even hoard cash to buy a bigger ship with more areas to add attractions.

If you release this for the iPhone then the mini-games being added as Duncan finds them adds the possibility to take advantage of iPhone OS 3.0 with the micro-transactions to buy new things for the traveling show.

Sorry for the double post but somehow I missed: “Try to think of smaller scale ideas for now.”

Scratch my previous post :)

:)

Any and all ideas appreciated of course! I’m sure I even could pull some nuggets of short game ideas to put together even from the ideas you just presented there ;)

Duncan can’t play music very well, unfortunately… he led a sheltered life as a gardener and he thought a Bard was something he couldn’t grow on his chin until he was almost 23 years old.

hehe In the scenario above If Duncan could play very well he wouldn’t have to wander around looking for stuff to trade, but I hear you. :)

It wouldn’t have to feature Duncan or be tied to Arvale in any way. I guess I have been looking for a long while for a game like the one above. Something of a cross-breeding of “Space Trader” and “Mario Party” (not the board game part). All the fun of a space trader with fun mini-games thrown in.

Jaypapa, I like the short tales in the space idea too.
You rock, so I am sure it will be awesome:)

@goro:

You know… I remember someone who has the code sitting around for a space trader game completed and just collecting dust somewhere. ;)

All it needs is some content and a bit of polishing and we could do something with it.

We’ll chat.

I’m leaning towards an episodic Arvale… in the style of the one here: http://jaybot7.com/blog/new-arvale-game-release

I’m thinking I can do short episodes of 5-10 hours of gameplay on one continent (similar to Arvale:JOI) and then end it there, put a cap on the levels for each story and then pick up the next episode at the capped Level…

It’s quite doable, and I already have the plans mapped out on paper. :)

Hmmm, love the idea of episodic Arvale tales; am off right now to grab the Really Short Tale.

What about something in the Arvale universe but with one of the other characters? As a female gamer, I’d love to see something with a heroine…

Morgan, thanks for the comments, always appreciated :)

Actually, the original idea for Arvale III was going to be Tales of Silk, with the female Silk from Arvale: JOI as the main character. :)

In the episodic Arvales, I’m planning on having many characters of which you can choose to be in your party. I haven’t checked recently, but I believe there are about 5 females to choose from already.

Thanks for the games. :D

I was going to suggest Silk, but wasn’t sure what happened to her during Arvale II (have only just got back to a device that will run Arvale so am catching up; it didn’t like my square screen)

Good to hear you have some female characters in the plan. Will there also be a wheelbarrow character? ;)

You’ll see a brief glimpse of what happened to her and Duncan at the very end of Arvale II. :)

Wheelbarrow character? :D Hmmm, maybe…

I miss Chrono Trigger ;-P

Who doesn’t?

Too bad Chrono Cross took the idea too far, now they can’t go back and make a linear sequel to Chrono Trigger :)
