Renewable Energy from Texting, Typing, and Gaming Video

by Jason Surguine on November 13, 2009

I don’t normally post about any videos or random projects using some of my Free Royalty Free Music, but this one piqued my interest:

It’s a video from Denmark by Copenhagen Business, (don’t worry it’s in English) and it has a bunch of random facts and numbers about energy consumption and waste, but what’s really interesting is they are suggesting (or researching) a way of turning simple tasks –like texting/SMSing on a phone, typing on a keyboard, and even movements on your video game controller– into energy. Using kinetic energy isn’t a new concept. In fact, lots of wristwatches already do this (such as the Citizen Eco Drive watches and many Seiko watches). However, this is the first time I’ve heard the suggestion of applying that principle to keyboards… or gaming devices. I wonder how feasible it is? What do you think?

Hmm…they didn’t show how it work?

My guess is that it is more of a proposal. But I can easily see how it might work.

You would need a special keyboard/phone/controller to do it. Each time a button is pressed/moved it would charge and store that as kinetic energy into a cell, to be used for energy later (for what, I don’t know).
