I like the idea of niche marketing. I personally don’t think I could ever handle it though. I cover too broad a variety of topics. Which is my fault, I know. But I like to be honest.
Niche marketing pretty much describes itself. Wait, wait, lemme use Wikipedia:
‘An often used technique for affiliate marketers. By seeking out smaller segments of larger markets, a website can be developed and promoted quickly to uniquely serve a targeted and usually loyal customer base, giving the affiliate a small but regular income stream. This technique is then repeated across several other niche websites until a desired income level is achieved.’
Got it? Good. So you serve a small % of the online world (about 1.6 billion) let’s say .01% of customers (that’s still 160,000 people) with a product specifically for them. Even if you only sold to 5% of them (8000), a product at $10 is a cool $80,000. Not bad, huh?
While I could easily make a site dedicated to Games for Banana Eating Rock Climbers on Venus, and be perfectly targeted to that .01% of the BERCoV population of the world and rake in all sorts of dough; I don’t want to make games specifically for BERCoVs*. I want to make games for well, fun. Entertainment for all who wish to enjoy it.
While I could create a separate site simply targeted to BERCoVs and rake in all that dough and then use that dough to fund what I really want to do, I still wouldn’t feel quite right about it. I’d feel like I wasn’t being entirely honest to the BERCoVs of the world.
If you are in a Niche and you can honestly market to it, awesome. I wish I were in that position. I’m just not niche-y enough to do it myself yet. If you’re not in a Niche and you’re just marketing to it to make money, awesome. I’m just too honest to do that.
