I try to stay away from anecdotal stories. But I couldn’t help noticing this over the past few weeks.
It really hit me when I was went to a Jacuzzi at some hotel somewhere (long story) and there was a bunch of late high-schoolers, early college kids. And I felt guilty because I brought a beer (it was a long day).
I stayed quiet for a change and just listened to them talk. It was really boring stuff for the most part. School, studying, classes, dating, parties… Wait, parties? That’s interesting.
They rambled on for awhile about so-and-so being there and how they were happy that there was no alcohol or drugs. And when one person did bring drugs and they made him leave the party.
Perhaps this was a freak occurrence, and the Jacuzzi was full of Mormons. That was my first thought too, but one of them was drinking a Coca-Cola, so it couldn’t have been, right?
But I have been noticing this trend in many locales when I begin to eavesdrop People Watch naturally. Maybe we can blame the internet for making our kids more well informed, and allowing them to make more intelligent decisions?
I believe the majority of kids out there today are more well informed not only through Google and Wikipedia, but also on social and personal issues through social websites such as Facebook and MySpace. Thus resulting in well… smarter, nicer people.
It’s an interesting theory.
